Two million children in the UK are currently struggling with talking and understanding words.1 A 2023 report found that 1 in 5 children in the UK are behind with their communication and noted that speech and language challenges effect all aspects of a child’s life. Children with Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) were found to disproportionally be identified as falling behind their peers academically, struggling with peer relationships, having behaviour and/or mental health problems, and facing employment challenges as an adult.2 Early Intervention can and does make an important difference for children with SLCN.
