Hanen: The Power of Parents

What is Hanen?

The Hanen Centre was founded by Speech and Language Therapist Ayala Hanen Manolson in 1977. Hanen’s core principles were based in research that demonstrated that parents have a significant impact on the success of their child’s intervention. Early Hanen courses taught parents how to become their child’s “… best language teacher within the context of their everyday interactions and activities”.1 As the body of research around the effectiveness of parent-implemented intervention grew, the Hanen Centre turned its attention to training speech and language therapists to lead Hanen Programs for the parents in their local communities.

Today speech and language therapists trained in the Hanen approach use a parent coaching model to deliver group or one-on-one training to parents to support them in using specific language-building strategies with their child during everyday interactions. Research continues to demonstrate that parents can have a “… big impact on (their) child’s communication development. (and) … when parents use specific interaction strategies with their child during everyday routines and conversations, children’s language skills improve.”2
